Whether you’ve heard the song “How He Loves” on the David Crowder*Band’s new album (Church Music), heard Kim Walker of Jesus Culture belt it out, or heard John Mark McMillan’s original version, the song is undoubtedly a powerful one. However, the way the song has been interpreted by David has some listeners up in arms.

When David heard this song, he started “weeping like a little kid”. He knew the song had a great potential for impacting so much more than it had already, but the song had a couple words that were “apparently unnerving”. David says (on the Passion podcast) the song’s theme of God’s incredible love for us would most likely be missed because of these couple words, and he knew many would reject the song altogether because of them. From there, David contacted John Mark (original writer) about the lyrics; John Mark says on his blog, “David contacted me and very sincerely asked if it would be cool to change a couple words in his version, because he knew that there are literally thousands of people who would never hear the song the way it was.”

On the blog, John Mark wrote his blog entry because of the way people had responded to David’s changes, “I’m certainly flattered that people would be so passionate about my original version of the song, but I feel bad that David’s taken so much flack over this whole deal…. David has told the story of the song and given me full credit on countless radio interviews and press releases.”

In the end, John Mark had bittersweet sentiments about the whole situation, “The idea behind the lyric is that the kingdom of heaven and the kingdom of earth converge in a way that is both beautiful and awkwardly messy…. I applaud David for changing the line to serve his people, and at the same time I boo the machinery that would cause him to have to do so.”
