A worship resource created by Chris Tomlin and a team of worship leaders

July 2009

The FQblog brings you a great picture of the content available at FQworship.com. Today’s post is from the Themes section.
The Themes section at FQworship.com is designed to assist you in planning a worship service around a central theme or message. Our goal is that it will help bring a fresh look at attributes that define a Christian walk. These themes may be the topic of a Bible study, a sermon, a word study or simply a personal study.
Each theme at FQworship.com includes a definition, a closer insight on the word itself, scripture references and a list of songs that include that theme. Our desire is that this will assist you in creating environments where people can experience genuine worship.

Love
intense feeling of affection toward someone.

Insight
Scriptures are filled with love letters from God to us and from men to God. In the Old Testament, God demonstrates his love for the Hebrew people as He is loyal to them, and asks for their loyalty in return. When Jesus comes, He beautifully demonstrates and illustrates what God’s love is all about.

This is how God loves us. God pays attention to us.
- Love Beyond Reason, John Ortberg

Worship the loving God
God, You are Love! Your Love is amazing and never fails! You have demonstrated Your Love for us so many times. We are grateful and humbled. You have our affection, devotion, and obedience. Teach us to love our neighbors and our enemies. We want to be a reflection of Your Love.

Christ and Culture.
Between the Economy, Swine Flu, and Afghanistan, the news of today is discouraging to say the least.  Everyone seems to have a lot on their minds.  Laced with fear and uncertainty of the future, the talk of the town can be downright depressing.  Christians are not immune to this culture of fear- it’s all too easy to get sucked in and brought down by the circumstances of our world.   As followers of Christ, we have an opportunity to remain focused on Christ and His promises.  In the meantime, offering a big dose of HOPE to those around us.

Remember when Jesus said, “I am with you always.”
Every Sunday morning we face other believers in worship and the issue of trust weighs on every individual.  In all things, will we trust God?  Turning all eyes upon Jesus and allowing the things of earth to grow dim…what a needed posture!  Whether we are aware of it or not, approaching the Throne of God in worship is an incredible opportunity to live out Philippians 4:4 together in the face of whatever we are going through:  Paul begins with thankfulness and prayer, then He says, “Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say: Rejoice!”  Wow- He makes it pretty clear…He goes on to say, “Let your gentleness be evident to all.  The Lord is near.  Do not be anxious about anything but in everything present your requests to God.”  This is clear direction from God.  It is interesting that gentleness is part of His direction.  Life is busy- sometimes so busy that we forget the gentleness of our God.

There has always been a war going on.
In 2 Chronicles, God leads His people into war.  Before they leave, a “worship team” is assembled (full story, 2 Chronicles 20).   God’s people needed to be focused and reminded that God was worthy of their worship.  Today there is a battle not between flesh and blood but, an unseen war!  The enemy is at work!  Fear of losing a job, fear of losing the ability to buy whatever we want when we want it, fear of future provision is vying for our attention.  Getting a little caught up in all of this? God is still worthy of our attention and affection.  Leaders- we can plan a worship journey with sensitivity to life-issues and what God wants us to focus on in the midst of them.

More than Enough.
Anxiety and fear are directly addressed in Philippians 4.  We are told to present our requests to God.  The promise comes one verse later when Paul says that, “the peace of God will rule in our hearts and minds”.  Songs like, “None but Jesus” and “Enough” help us declare to God that we indeed are willing to trust Him.  As the body of Christ, we want to recommit to Him (often) that He has and always will be more than enough!

What an exciting time it is to live in! With a couple clicks of a mouse, you can find a new worship song just about every day.  It’s so encouraging to know the that Holy Spirit is loud in the hearts of so many believers.  It’s also encouraging when we can read a worship song that was first sung hundreds of years ago by our brothers and sisters in Christ.  Take a few minutes to read about the Hallel Psalms, may this bless your day…

The Hallel Psalms
Hallel praise is the name given to the group of Psalms 113-118, which are predominantly psalms of praise.  It is called “The Egyptian Hallel” because it was chanted in the temple while the Passover lambs were being slain.  It was spoken at other celebratory occasions, such as Pentecost, the Feast of Tabernacles, and the Feast of Dedication.
The leaders would stand before the altar and chant it, verse by verse, while the people would respond by repeating the verses or softly singing hallelujah. This was also most likely the hymn that Jesus and his disciples sung at the end of the Passover supper in the upper room in Jerusalem (Matt. 26:30; Mark 14:26).
It is so humbling to know that these few verses have been a part of such a rich history of the body of believers!  It’s amazing that the same psalms that were chanted and shouted during such sacred events in history are the same psalms that can be a part of our daily lives.
The Hallel psalms are filled with praises to God for his love, faithfulness, compassion, grace and righteousness.  They bring a call to worship and encourage the nations to sing praise.  What a powerful gift these psalms are! They represent one voice to one God.  As you read thru Psalms 113-118, imagine the millions of brothers and sisters that have spoken these words in praise to our Lord.

Be Still
remaining in a place of rest.

Insight
Pursuing God in this life can be difficult. Stress and busyness seem to take over and there is little time left to spend with God. Jesus knew all about this during His ministry on earth, but made a point of spending quiet, still times with His Father. Take a moment now to be still and listen.

Lord, teach me to listen. The times are noisy and my ears are weary with the thousand raucous sounds which continuously assault them. Give me the spirit of the boy Samuel when he said to Thee, ‘Speak, for thy servant heareth.’ Let me hear Thee speaking in my heart. Let me get used to the sound of Thy voice, that its tones may be familiar when the sounds of the earth die away and the only sound will be the music of Thy speaking voice. Amen.

Worship and be still before God
Let us meditate on You today Lord God. Let everything that is going on in our lives fade as we eagerly wait to hear from You. We long to hear from You. Our hearts are still and our souls are quiet. We find rest and restoration in Your presence. Lead us, Dear Lord, by the still waters-for Your namesake.
